D-Light power question

Hi Guys... I have a quick question, and I was hoping ya'll could shoot me a quick answer. ;-)
I have 4 D-lights...running on one of the small DMX controllers...Should I put the DMX controller on a switched circuit and keep the lights on an open circuit so that the fans can continue to run if needed, or should I piggyback the lights and the controller to the same switched circuit?
It would seem that in the first method, the lights stay off, once power to the DMX controller is cut...but the cooling fans can continue to cool. Although, I'm unsure if the fans would ever go off....Are they on a thermostat?
I am setting up a new light show, and in the process of deciding how they will be hooked up, so I would love to hear your input. Thanks a bunch!
