I've been looking at scanners, moving heads, etc. to add to my show. So far, the moving heads are in the lead, but the scanners are much less expensive. Most of my lighting is par can LED or incandescent, with 4 LED panels for a wash on the drums and a little back lighting. Now, we're looking for some really high impact lighting to add. Maybe just 4 fixtures. Can scanners be programmed to hit staging marks? ...or is that only possible with moving heads?

To Chris and Jingles, you guys have been a huge help so far. In my first attempt at actually running a show live, I had a flawless performance from MyDmx with nothing more than the programming I did with the visualizer! Addressing was overly simple and the stepped scenes worked great!

Thanks guys!

Scanners can hit marks like moving heads can. The disadvantage is they can't hit as much since they are limited to about 180 degrees of pan and about 120 or so degrees of tilt. A moving head can hit anything except for about 100 degrees of tilt behind it. Moving heads also tend to be brighter since the light doesn't have to bounce off a mirror.

Follow jingles advice and let us know what you are thinking and what you have budget wise. We can throw some more ideas out then and some can give opinions on fixtures.
We're committed to getting at least 4 fixtures. My budget is around $1200-1600, but if I can do something for less, all the better. The biggest consideration is hitting staging marks and the biggest bang for the buck.
My best friend owns a music store and has been dealing in MBT lighting, so obviously that's what I've been buying, but if I can put together a decent order, he's willing to carry ADJ. The MBT selection leaves a lot to be desired...
Hmm, with that budget, you probably can't swing 4 moving heads if you are set on 4 fixtures. You can get 4 scanners for that much however. I would recommend the X-Scan LED. It would work great and not add much in the way of power requirements to your system (they use about 1/3 an amp a piece). It will also keep the heat down and you don't have to worry about replacing lamps (with 50,000 hour rated life, they last for almost 6 years running 25/7, 365 a year). You should be able to swing 4 for around $1,600.

Looking for something less expensive, check out the Fusion Scan 250EX or the DJ Scan 250EX. You should be able to get 6-8 DJ Scans within your budget or 4 Fusion Scans.
Thanks, SerraAva.
I'd like to stick with LED, if possible, so I'll be looking into upping the budget to accommodate the X-Scan. Since there are a lot of club owners that don't understand power issues, it's easier to stay with lower consumption fixtures. I appreciate your response!
