Is there a source for hardware that can be installed into a computer and will output a standard dmx protocol? If so, any information will be appreciated. Also, is software available too that will work in conjunction to create a patch for this system? I would like to create my own lighting system eventually and use an old laptop instead of a lighting board for control. Thanks a lot.

Well there are two types, soft patch and hard patch. A hard patch involves plugging in different circuits to dimmers (by hand). A soft patch is done on the controller but does the exact same thing. For example, you have 4 par cans plugged into different circuits within the theater, say circuit 25, 34, 46, and 49, but you want to control these cans on channels 1-4 on your controller. You must patch these into channels 1-4. Of course this would not apply to those four channel dimmer packs that operate on one 20 amp circuit.

Does this make any sense? Big Grin
Its the same way with sound also. Lets say your mics are numbered 50-60 u want them to be in channels 1-10 on the board. So you patch each channel from the output of the microphones into the corresponding input on your mixing board. Cool, and yet so simple...but they give it the fancy names to make it sound a lot more involved than it really is! Hey makes my job sounds more important!!
