i was curious as to which would be a better controller. the DMX Operator or the Scene Setter. I am torn between the two and was wondering which would be better. We are running 4 djscan 250s, some strobes and a fog machine (got a dimmer back already). down to the last thing...the board. seems the operator is ok, but doesnt let you do too many scenes, compared to the scene setter. we need lots of scenes i suppose, and as many programs as possible. i have found them both at the same price at several places. i am torn. please help

I am not 100% sure because I can't find a manual for the Scene Setter, but it appears to me it is only for dimmers. Your dj scan 250s may not work with it. I also have dj scan 250s and was trying an Operator II with them and have had some problems that I haven't gotten resolved yet. If you find a controller that works well let me know. I will do the same.
thanks for the reply. i think you are right. for dimmers. hmm, i had looked at the operator II possibly as well. sucks to hear that you are having problems. i was going to check one out this evening. is it possibly a damaged unit you have, or are you having compatibility issues with the lights or something. i am curious now. thanks again
the scene setter should be fine. I run a pair of scantrons with a stage desk 16 and it works great. The scene setter is dmx capatable and so are the dj scan 250's so it should work. The slider on the scene setter are kind of the same as the dmx operator. hope this helps you out.
The problem I was and am having with the operator II and the dj scan 250s is when I set the lights to a certain position and color, after a while anywhere from 5 to 15 seconds the mirror will move one step then move right back or the color wheel will move then go right back. I guess if you are just lighting a dance floor maybe this is not a problem, but if I am lighting a performer and this happens I am sure I will get nasty looks. All my equipment is brand new. I have tried 3 different dj scan 250s and 2 different controllers.
The operator was intended to operate intell lights. the scene setter was intended for Dimmer pack. The scene setter only has 24 channels. Each DJScan 250 has 4 channels. If you are not planning on adding more the scene setter could work. It is a pain in programming though as you would have to move each pan and tilt individually. with the operator you can select or deselect each scanner as needed. That way you select the same color gobo deselect others and move the lights.
Hey guys, thanks a lot for all the info here. I jumped in really big on this, and got in over my head. I went with a DMX operator for now. I have 30 days to decide if its worth it to switch to the DMX operator II or something else. The place I went didn't have either the DMX Operator II or the Scene Setter in stock. I'm really just unfamiliar with this stuff. We wanted to have lots of scenes going, be able to draw the lights in circles etc. I figure I can do this without the need of a scroll wheel or joystick like some have, but will require more programming. I didn't want to "under-do" the show though. All the same, thanks again for the advice.
The DJ Scan 250 may be the culprit here; they seem to be unreliable in some cases, don't know why. If you are really serious about your show, look at the Showdesigner 1. It's more money, but it's a real controller. The DMX Operator is virtually useless for real programming, and the Operator II is no better; the Scenesetter will work for you, but it really won't allow you to do all of the really cool things you can do with Intelligent lights. Also, look at the ScanTrons; we've had absolutely no problems with them, and they're very affordable.
Just don't short-change yourself on the controller; it's the most important piece of gear you will buy.
