Hello all
I'm with a 5 pc. band that plays classic rock. We have decided to upgrade our light show and need advice. Right now we are using:

2 stands with par 46 cans

a 10' truss that goes behind the drummer w/4 par 36 cans and a cheap lightbar w/4 lights all aimed at the drummer. and 2 dual gems at each end mounted sideways.

1 razz matazz that sits on top of one of the p.a. speakers

1 dyno fog II

The areas we set up in usually have about a 10' high ceiling, 15-20' wide stagefront with about a 7-15' depth. Not a whole lot of room but we manage to fit pretty easily because we all use line 6 pods going directly to the board. Right now our Bass player is running sound and lights/fog machine, but we are looking for a soundman to lessen his duties!
We have decided to spend about $1000-$1500 for upgrades with thoughts to our future and what we would not have to waste the money on something that will not be used in the future. Obviously we need a dmx controller, but not something that would be overkill..or underkill. We have also looked at LED lights to replace the par 46's or intelligent lighting, but don't really know anything about what to get...your help, opinions, suggestions, and expertice would be most welcome. Thanks!

Classic Rock eh?

Well you COULD go for those new and fabulous intelligent fixtures out there, but I'd say that you would want to keep the "classic" look, that being pars and more pars Big Grin

You have a few options here. You could:

A: Get more auto-chasing pars or lights and stick them around the place...cheaper but lacks a lot

B: Get more pars with a full dmx system to customize your lights shows much more then you currently can. Slightly more expensive, but very nice and organized not to mention many lights to light up the stage. The only problem with this is power could be an issue.

or
C: Get LED pars/panels with a full dmx system and maybe a few dimmer packs for the old ones. Advantage is that you will have infinite colors and a VERY customizable/unique show. Dis-advantages: expensive, maybe slightly over budget for everything.

You could even put a correction filter on the LED pars to make them appear like a normal par!

These options of course are if what I assumed about wanting pars is correct. Other wise correct me and I can suggest some different options.

I went out and bought 4 adj par 64 led cans, 4 adj dj 250 hp scanners and an elation stage setter 8 controller that comes with 2 dimmer packs...although it doesn't have the ability to run all the lights. I am thinking of getting an elation dmx operator, or operator 192, but would like to know if I can hook that and the stage setter 8 up with midi cables to run them both as one unit?
