I need to light up a backdrop, using lights I place on the floor. So pinspot or parcans will not do. Backdrop is 10ft wide by 8ft high.
Any ideas would be appreciated

well ya got a tricky situation. American DJ offers a flood light bar that contains 4 different lights for any color combinations needed. Hope this helps and good luck.
Use H20 II light. Really cool backdrop light with relaxing water effect. Looks really good with slower ambient music. Use blues and reds.
Why did you say par cans will not do? They should do fine. It doesnt matter if it sits on the floor. 
I've used both pars and pins on the floor with great success. Another idea might be a Groove wheel or Trance. I've used oil wheels on backdrops for years and have gotten tons of compliments about it. It can wash out with high ambient light BUT almost anything will!!

Depending on your budget you can go for WASH Moving Head fixtures... Most will give you unlimited color mixing, if you need it, some even give you Gobos, zoom, etc,etc...
If you are not on a tight budget you can look at these... I think Elation has a few, and other brands too.
