I can't speak for anyone other than myself and past experiences with electronics in general, including stuff I had more than just the hand in the development of.
Components are bought in large quantities to get prices lower. Plus, many parts are used in multiple products, which again, leads to big bulk purchases. This is all basic "economies of scale" type stuff, boring crap that will put you to sleep.
Now, components tend to be made in batches. These batches tend to be logged and tracked by both the maker and the buyer. Due to a wide variety of reasons(mainly Chinese cutting corners, sorry, but it's a fact), a batch may come through with a higher than acceptable fail rate, despite tests that show acceptable/QC passing. Often, when an end-product company, ADJ being just an exmaple of such a company, finds out such things such as bad batch, they may choose to recall any fixtures with serial numbers that could be affected by this bad batch because it can be cheaper to do this than wait for end users to start shipping their items for RA's.
This happens with cars, it happens with computers, it happens with components, and it can happen with food, chemicals and virtually any product.
Does the Jellyfish suffer from a bad batch? I can't say. Now, two things to take into consideration: 1, I am definately an ADJ and Elation product fan, so my views may be somewhat biased, and 2, I have experienced similar things with different products.
What can I say though? Let's say this is the truth. If I'm trying to get something under a hard time crunch, this becomes an issue which could really anger me. If I am not under time concerns, then it at least explains why something is not arriving promptly and the matter is resolved. This is me looking at how I would deal with the matter as an end user. I also would rather wait for a proper product then have to deal with the inconvenience of an RA and shipping, downtime and turn-around.
Now, coming as a product reseller: I'd be angry as this can cost me orders and money because I got angry clients who may cancel orders because of this.
Coming as someone who has helped design and engineer a product from the ground up, I take personal offense to "my product" being made with products not up to my spec, causing me to start screaming and getting in the fact of the president and CEO of the company.
Regardless, unless we have total control of all aspects down to every last microscopic detail(which is impossible), this sort of thing will happen from time to time.
