3 fixtures vs 4; barrel vs flat

It depends on which ones??? What does your current show consist of? What type of effect are you looking for?

it really depends on what the FX that you want. By the way, what intelligent light fixture(s) are you planning to buy anyway?

3 lights: 1 rollertron and 2 scantrons
4 lights: dj scan 250s
currently I have some basics: vertigos, 4 tracers that chase, mace and helicopter

If you DJ dances get barrels, if you do stage events get flat mirrors.

Id go with 2 flat and two barrell fx. Try different combos in your setup. (ie b=barrel f=flat):
b,b,f,f,
b,f,b,f
f,f,b,b
f,b,f,b
b,f,f,b
f,b,b,f etc..

the possibilities are endless!

Actually, AMP, there is an end.
The total combinations available would only be 24. How? Well, four fixtures, four positions. Using factorials and permuatations, we find that 4! = 4x3x2x1 = 24 possible combinations.

Now, if we had 8 fixtures:
8x7x6x5 = 1680 That's alot of combinations!

(sorry AMP, I'm just being a wiseguy. Nothing but love AMP. Remember all those time in math class saying "When are we going to use this?" )

I would also go with two barrel and two flat, imo.

Definitely 2 Scantrons & 1 Rollertron; fixtures are much better than the DJ 250, and the barrel effect is totally different than the scanners.
You didn't mention control; if you are going this route, plan on investing in a good DMX controller as soon as possible.
