Might seem too simple, but are you using a DMX terminator at the far end of your data line? If you're running a hundred feet or so of control cable, you probably need a terminator. They're really easy to make and darn cheap too.

Also, if you're using mic cables for DMX data lines, you really should make sure all the XLR grounds are cut from the shield to the XLR plug barrel & frame. Using grounded to shield XLR cables for DMX will cause a data ground loop and make everything work very unreliably.
